The reason why Carthage was able to rule the seas for so long was because of its’ mighty navy that secured safe territories and trade routes. ...

Carthage coerced smaller countries into believing they needed Carthage’s help. Also Carthage signed a series of treaties with Rome in order to keep peace and control of the seas. The Navy could and was used to pressure their weaker neighbors into making deals or allowing Carthage to take control of certain areas. Diplomacy was an effective tool used by Carthage to help rule the seas.
Carthage developed extensive trade networks in order to obtain vast riches. ... This was also possible do to the fact that Carthage had a strong navy to protect merchant vessels and trade routes.
