Bend It Like Beckham is an excellent example of what happens when
two very different cultures are experienced at once.
The movie mainly focuses on the concept of marginalization. The main
character, Jesminder, is a first generation Indian girl living in England ehose
dream is to play soccer for England. The movie is promising because it gives
a very interesting portrayal of two cultures intertwined. Jess tries to please
her family and be her own person at the same time, and because the movie
centers on her, there are many examples of conflicts and differences that arise
because of Jess's situation. The movie entertains while showing Jess's
interest in the British culture and her attempts to stay true to her family's
Indian traditions. Specifically, Jess is expected to learn how to cook a
traditional Indian meal and marry a nice Indian man. However, because she
lives in a different culture where she sees other girls doing other things, Jess
sets different goals for herself. It is humorous because at home Jess obeys her
mothers wishes and tries to cook, but during the day, she joins a women's
soccer team without her parents permission. This shows the concept of
marginalization very well...
