Themes and Values in Emma Clueless

"Clueless", released in 1993 and directed by Amy Heckling was based on the original novel "Emma" written by Jane Austin in 1816. Both Clueless and Emma portray similar values, although the degree of emphasis on values encountered within the texts are subject to the era which the text was created in. Emma was written in the early 19th century, where as Clueless was produced in the late 20th century, with a difference of almost two-hundred years.
Ideas of values have changed throughout time, and thus Clueless, using values from Emma, present a modern version of Emma.
Marriage During the 19th century, marriage was regarded as sacred thing, although many marriages were based on social status. Vows exchanged were taken much more seriously than those in the 20th century, where divorce rates have increased and less people are marrying.
Social Status In Austin's era, social status and position were a crucial part of their society. Social class was everything, and those who were less fortunate were often shunned from society. Heckling's presentation of Clueless does not focus on social status as much as Emma, but rather emphasizes that Cher was spoilt and had everything that she wanted. Her wealth and popularity does not segregate her from society, although she belongs to a clique of people of similar social status to her and does not attend functions in which people of a lower social class are holding...
