The Five-Forty-Eight is a story about society and not just these two characters. It's written in a male point of view -- Blake's -- which is very important in analyzing the story. Blake represents the typical male (I'm not implying that all males act as badly as Blake, but he's in control throughout the story.. at a word he makes Miss Dent lose her job and ruins her entire well-being, emotionally and physically.. the females in the story on the other hand represent the typical female, always in a passive role [remember this story was written in 1954].. both Miss Dent and blake's wife.) When Miss Dent is in the hospital at the beginning of the story she tells about how she has all of these dreams and desires, but the hospital only wants her to have dreams of "sewing and basketwork" <--- in other words, "they" (specifically in the story, society, but it's implied that people have told her this before..
