How would you like if you couldn't be friends with who you would want to be or have your whole life predestined for you. Reuven and Danny both have this problem and other conflicts with their fathers and religions. The two major themes of The Chosen are Choosing versus being Chosen and Friendship.
Reuven and Danny seem to be raised up with a predestined life where they have little choices if any at all. In the book neither Reuven nor Danny have a choice of which religion they want to be part of. They were raised by their families to be Jewish and neither of them resent it in fact they like their religion. One important thing about Danny is his relationship with his father. Danny did not have a choice to have a silent relationship with Reb Saunders. Danny explains this to Reuven saying, "My father believes in silence.
