George Washington Carver: A Brief Overview
George Washington Carver, a renowned agricultural chemist, impacted American history and culture by expanding the economy of the South in the 1880's with the creation of new legume products. Though "Carver was neither political nor an activist," his work forever changed the South (Smith 179). From his frail, unstable beginning to life, until his death, he strived for success and achieved it.
Carver started his life in about 1860. He was born to slave parents and had to face hardship on account of his race. He was taken from his plantation when he was young, by slave raiders. He was later traded for a race horse (Estell 666). Moses Carver, a white man, raised him from his early childhood. He was a frail child that "was unable to manage physically stressful jobs around the house" (Smith 177). While he was young, he also "developed a keen interest in plant life, collecting flowers and specimens for a small, concealed garden near his home" (Estell 667)...
