Themes play a very significant role in written literature. Without them, stories would have no meaning. In the novel, A Tale of Two Cities, many themes are presented. The first one is violence; because the novel is set during the French Revolution, violence is huge part of the story. The second theme is resurrection or rebirth, which is shown in many cases during the novel. The third significant theme of the book is love; in many instances throughout the story, love is how the characters got through the difficulties of the time. In A Tale of Two Cities, the themes are the most important part of the novel, and the reason that the story is a classic.
Violence and death is a significant and recurring theme in A Tale of Two Cities. For example, during the French Revolution, many innocent people were arrested and imprisoned at the Bastille, where they became victims of violent behaviour from fellow cell mates and prison guards. Doctor Manette, an important character in the novel, was sent to the Bastille when the powerful Evrmonde's had him arrested fearing that he would tell the authorities of the crimes they had committed...
