Hamlet Essay: To be or not to be?
In the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare the soliloquy " To be or not to be?" is a true turning point in the play. As shown in the soliloquy, Hamlet's character is changing, evolving and progressing. Also, the soliloquy adds to the plot, and changes the plot direction. Lastly it creates suspense for the unknown future.
The soliloquy shows how Hamlets character is changing. Instead of striving or dreaming of revenge on Claudius, he is contemplating on if death would solve his problems in life. " To be or not to be: that is the question:/ Wether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer/ The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,/ Or to take arms against a sea of troubles," (III, i, 56-59) The soliloquy also shows how Hamlet feels about mankind. He feels that it is the human conscience that prevents us from discovering things in life, even death...
