Julia Billiart was born in 1751 at Cuvilly in Picardy, in France As a child she enjoyed studying religion and at the age of seven she would explain the catechism to other children. The parish priest admired her for this and allowed her to make her Holy Communion at age 9, which was early back then. Also, he allowed her to take the vow of chastity when she was 14. Even though Julia had to work to help support her family, she found time to visit the sick, teach others about religion and pray.
One day, a gun was fired through the window at her father and this caused her to get a mysterious illness. She was unable to use her limbs and had great pain. Even though she had to stay in bed, she continued to teach religion to children and give spiritual advice to those who came to see her. In 1790, during the French Revolution, a new priest, who had taken an oath to the revolutionaries, came to town. Through Julia's influence he was boycotted. Because of this, the leaders of the revolution wanted to burn her alive...
