The Whaler
Everybody has an idol, someone we look up to, and tries to be like. ... This is what happens to the main character in Joe Sheerin’s short story “The Whaler”. ... One day on his way home with the shopping, he meets his big Idol, a local whaler, who is home after many years abroad:
“It was the whaler. ... ” (page 1 line 5-7)
In the town, many stories have been circulating about the whaler. ... These stories have made the boy believe, that the whaler is a hero, and therefore he sees the whaler as an idol. Meeting the whaler is therefore overwhelming for the boy. But as the boy sits down and talks to the whaler, the boy gets a different impression of the whaler. The boy had expected the whaler to be a strong and noble man, but as their conversation carries on, the boy discovers that the whaler is just a lowlife bum. Throughout their conversation, the whaler acts very insensitive and stupid, as he destroys the boy’s image of the whaler, by telling the boy that all the stories about him aren’t true, and that he never has seen a whale in his life.
