The Benefits of being Straight Edge, and Vegan
The paper I am writing about is being straightedge, the history of it, the origins, the benefits of being vegan, the chemical awareness that people do not have on the subject, and who it affects today.
This has all been done a hundred times before, and I am sure my story and my thoughts on the subject will be no different than those before me. But, hey, I can try to add a little originality, couldn't I? Please pardon the length of this rant, but please read it all, if you are not straight edge or at least drug free, it may help.
Straight Edge was first coined by Ian McKaye of Minor Threat in the early 1980's. Straight edge, for him, was an escape from the self-defeating addictions within the Washington, DC punk scene he was a part of. The lifestyle he named was a way to break free from the problems of the scene and society in which he lived. It is still the same today, nearly 15 years later.
Second, the black X's worn on the hands (and all X's in general) were derived from the marks placed on the hands of minors at bars. X's were drawn on hands to identify those that could not be served alcohol, and the early straight edge scene adopted it to signify their commitment to the lifestyle...
