The 1920s was a time where change was possible. Prohibition seemed to give birth to an era of flappers and those thought to be reckless. The most promising changes were that people had the freedom to choose how they wanted to live and that working hard would bring them all that hey wanted. This belief became the sought after American Dream. In The Great Gatsby, George Wilson, Myrtle Wilson, and Jay Gatsby fail to live out the American Dream for themselves due to the way they attempt and the reasons for achieving it, and the rejection that they finally face.
The road to achieving the American Dream is one that not all can succeed in. For George Wilson, and unprosperous owner of a car repair shop in the valley of ashes, he hasn't been able to create the dream because his establishment has had little business.
