A good relationship is a special bond between two people in which one person completely loves and understands the other. Some people are quick to find good relationships, some people never find them at all, and for others, it just takes a little time and discovery. June Woo and her mother, Suyuan Woo, fell into this last category. They were two different peopleJune, an Americanized woman trying to understand her mother, and Suyuan, a worried mom trying to leave a lasting impression on her daughter. The relationship between June and Suyuan was unsteady, but in the end, through discovering her true cultural values and closing a communication gap, June finally comes to understand her mother.
Throughout the novel, June tried to understand the cultural values that lay dormant inside her heart and soul. For June, this was a long process, complicated by generation and cultural gaps. However, by the end of the novel, June discovers her true cultural values. " 'No, tell me in Chinese,' I interrupt. 'Really, I can understand' " (323)...
