In the early to mid 1900's Marianne Moore was recognized as a pioneer in a new form of poetry. She developed a new rhyme scheme, other than final syllables. This new style explored ideas such as counting rhythms by syllables and internal rhyme. Many of her poems were inspired by visuals: drawings, pictures, or even experiences in her own life. She took ordinary, everyday words and made them come alive. When it came to subject matter and theme, she demanded absolute freedom. Often times she developed her themes from looking at sketches, paintings, sculptures, and photographs. This love for visuals helped her create elaborate, yet common themes many Americans could relate to.
