In the world of shoulder rehabilitation, there are many different ways in dealing with it. When a physical therapist is introduced to a complete shoulder reconstruction patient, they must formulate a program using what is best for the patient. Aquatic rehabilitation is a very effective approach due to a wide variety of low impact exercises that come along with the ability to adjust the tension used. Both major types of rehab techniques, aquatic based and weight based are widely used and effective, but one puts less strain and stress and the shoulder and its corresponding parts. Although both methods are proven to be successful, aquatic rehab, just like any other method, should be supported by research that shows the results are effective. Aquatic rehabilitation offers an effective means of long and short-term sport-specific strength for the development of the rotator cuff and ligaments that are affected.
The use of water in rehabilitation of injuries has been around for centuries as a medium not just for rehabilitation but also for training and relaxation. According to athletic trainers "athletes use the pool to rehabilitate specific injuries, as a training medium during injury recovery, and as an alternative training site.
