Steinbeck’s “Of mice and men” tells us not that ‘dreams do not come true’, but instead that ‘man need his dreams to sustain him through life’. In the novel, George and Lenny are the two main characters. They are two friends traveling together during the time of “The Great Depression” in America. Lenny is ‘slow’ in the head, and relies heavily on George to keep him out of trouble. Lennys’ main weakness is his un-controllable strength. George, in some ways relies on Lenny as well. George uses Lenny to get jobs at ranches bucking barley, because Lenny is such a strong and sturdy worker. George and Lenny share a dream of one day purchasing a small block of land with a cozy little house; they would have a cage of rabbits which Lenny would tend to.
