Social expectations are changed according to a person's gender, males and females are expected to do two totally different things because of their gender. A Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams revolves around one day, the day that a gentlemen caller will come call upon Laura. Laura has no interest in meeting this man but her mother Laura is obsessed in finding a gentlemen caller for Laura. It is Tom's friends that comes to the house for dinner and Amanda thinks that he is a gentlemen caller but what she doesn't know is that he is married. The gentlemen caller is named Jim, he is clueless that is supposed to be a gentlemen caller because Tom just invited him over for dinner. When he talks to Laura he eventually tells her that he is married and than he leaves to go to his wife. Amanda had many gentlemen callers and she picked the wrong one so her entire life revolves around finding the perfect gentlemen caller for Laura. Tom dislikes Amanda very much and the only reason he works to pay the bills is for Laura. Laura is a very simple person, all she cares is about is her glass collection, nothing else. Jim is Tom's friend from high school, in high school he was a very popular person and every one expected him to be successful but he ended up in a dead end job...
