Australia, the world's smallest continent, is located entirely in the Southern Hemisphere and is made up of 5 mainland states, 1 island state, and 2 territories. The 5 mainland states are Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. The single island state is called Tasmania. The Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory are the two territories in Australia. Canberra, the capital of Australia, is located in New South Wales. The official name of Australia is the Commonwealth of Australia (Parker 1).
The land in Australia is mostly flat and like a plateau. The land in Australia can be divided into three physical geographic regions. Parker states, "The three physical geographic regions are the Western Plateau, the Eastern Highlands, and the Great Artesian Basin. The Western Plateau is made up of mostly desert and is covered with sand ridges" (2)...
