Children's picture story books can often be quite complex in the way that they are
constructed. This is done in such a way that the content of the book conveys a range of
themes, ideas, values, and beliefs. Many different techniques are used in order to
construct these. In the children's book 'where the wild things are.' By Maurice Sendak
colour, line, frame, binaries, hidden/ underlying meanings, and post colonial theory are
just some of the techniques used in the text that will be discussed further.
Post colonial ideals are certain cultural beliefs, seen as dominant, that have been
embedded into western society throughout history. As a result they have influenced
many children's texts. The images used in 'where the wild things are' show clear
