A dual-trace oscilloscope was connected to monitor vL and vS simultaneously.
Having set vS at 10Vp-p the 500 kΩ potentiometer was adjusted until the firing angle was as close as possible to 0. This would make VAK resemble a half-wave rectified waveform.The time at which the SCR was triggered on was recorded, so that the firing angle could be calculated.
The effect of the waveform of VAK was observed as the potentiometer was adjusted through its range.
