Colin Wheildon, as a journalist-typography, and Jakob Nielsen as a web designer will present the way material has a significant impact on communication. Also this essay will outline the key findings from Wheildon's research and clarify how the research can be applied directly to electronic screens. Eventually, by using insights from Neilson's research will explain how reading from screens requires a different design approach to be effective.
Wheildon's research was carried out 244 people in Sydney to complete the program. The purpose of this research was an attempt to examine several elements of typographic design. (Wheildon, 1995:9) The following statements are going to show what the research program has been found out.
First of all, Wheildon's research showed that the positional relationship of headlines to body matter could affect the reader's concentration. Reader must comply with reading gravity. The starting point from any pages is the upper left corner then the eye reaches the lower right corner, after scanning across and down progressively, the reading task is finished. The eyes will not go against the reading gravity, it will move to right and left...
