For many Native American Indians Peyote is a way of life. It is their way into a spiritual and eternal world. Peyote is not only a door to the spiritual world but also a teacher. In his article ‘The Peyote Way’ Slotkin describes his own personal experiences to the teachings of Peyote. According to Slotkin ‘ One common way in which Peyote teaches is by heightening the sensibility of the Peyotist, either in reference to himself or to others’ (Slotkin, pg132). When I first read that section I didn’t quite understand what he meant by that. As I kept on reading that section over and over I was able to understand in depth what it meant. Peyote teaches you how to know thy self, as in seeing your soul. It helps you evaluate your wrongdoing. Not only evaluate but to confess your sins, the sins we hide, neglect and try to avoid, even to ourselves, in order not to make them a reality. You go in a trance of prayer, to repent, and promise to go live on the right path, the Peyote road. I can too relate to this, I have never even heard of Peyote, but I have had my encounters of self-evaluation while under substances (I am clean now!).
