Codi Kuryvail English 12 28 April 2004 Mrs. Sanders 12 Months in Korea On July 7, 1952 James R. Nickerson became part of the United States Army. James willingly accepts the title of a proud Korean Veteran. James’s emotions stayed constant throughout the war. His belief that “war was a funny thing” became evident throughout the interview. Even at age 72 James still recalled the terror he experienced while in the Korean War. James had been living his life as a farmer until his draft notice arrived. When I asked what he did his last day as a civilian he simply replied, “I kissed my goodbye and that is honestly all I can remember. It must have not been to exciting since I can’t remember it!” On July 7 1952 James dropped everything and left for the Army. The next morning James left his family and went to Breckenridge Kentucky for basic training. James excelled in target practice and physical training. During his 16 weeks of basic training he became part of the top five in his company of 200 for shooting and physical training. James explained, “The bottom five in the company for physical training and shooting had to serve the top five breakfast in bed.” Because James managed to become such a good shot, he moved up to a heavy weapons company.
