What Impact Did The Computer Have on Graphic Design?
Introduction
Graphic design is a creative process that uses art and technology to communicate visually. In this research essay Ive decided to focus on how computers have impacted graphic design since the introduction in the late 1970s up until present day. I will also analyse the positive and negative effects in regards to appearance of design and how the thought process has changed since computers entered the graphic design industry.
In seeking how the computer has impacted graphic design/designers, Ive researched the three following areas: the history of computers and the relation to the design industry, the progression of graphic design due to computers, and finally some opinions on computer aided graphic design by some of the most influential graphic designers in the industry. (Ruby Vanderlans - co-founder of Émigré, Alexander Isley - former Art Director of SPY, Fabien Baron - Creative Director of Harpers Bazaar, )
History of Computers
The very first computer ever built was called ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator Analyser and Computer). ... However, in a rather short period of time, technological advancements allowed computers to do more sophisticated operations - which later led to specialised usage in all working fields, including graphic design.

In regards to graphic design, the history of computers does not go very far back, actually only 26 years. ... This would change graphic design forever. What differed the Apple Macintosh from other "personal computers" was its user-friendly graphical interface (operating system) and most importantly - the mouse, which allowed the user to effectively control the computer and its applications in a sense that had not been experienced before.

Before 1977 the majority of the computers in the design industry were mainly used for mathematical calculations and some CAD-drawing (Computer Aided Design), but not in the sense that we use them today.
In addition, computer software was developed, causing plentiful effect on the graphic design field. The two main software developers to graphic design over the years are Adobe Systems (founded 1982) and Quark Company (founded 1981).
