Comment on the observation that ¡±A joint venture may be a combination of Leonardo da Vinci¡¯s brain and Carl Lewis¡¯ legs; one wants to fly, the other insists on running.¡± And illustrate how diverse organizational units in strategic alliances can effectively and flexibly coordinate their activities. Alliances are not conventional organizations with fully internalized activities. The participating companies retain their own ideological and administrative identities. Which result in the cost of strategic and organizational complexity. There are numerous reasons why such cooperative ventures inevitably present some very significant management challenges: Differences in the administrative heritages of the partner companies; 2) Differences in economic, political, social, and cultural systems of the partner companies; 3) Covering a broad scope of operation involving product development, manufacturing, marketing, and related supporting tasks; 4) Growing environmental uncertainties.
