The title, " Their eyes are watching God" is taken from Chapter 18, as the hurricane strikes the Everglades. Tea Cake and Janie "sat in company with the others in other shanties, their eyes straining against crude walls and their souls asking if he meant to measure their puny might against His. They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God" (151). In Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, the reader is given a precise sight into Janie's life with reference to the men she has known. Janie's three men are all very different, yet they were all Janie's husbands at one point in her life. Although they had certain similarities, their lifestyle as well as their relationship with Janie was different. Tea Cake, Janie's third husband and first real love was different. Twelve years younger than Janie, Tea Cake astonishes her with his quick intelligence and zest for living. He has a real affection and understanding of Janie. He doesn't try to force Janie to be anything other than herself, and he treats her with respect...
