The snowmobile was invented by Joseph-Armand Bombardier. He was born on April 16, 1907, in the community of Valcourt, east of Montreal near Sherbrooke, Quebec. Back then, winters were so harsh. There was no efficient ways to travel over these conditions. Roads were plunged deep with snow, preventing the use of cars and trucks to travel, thus isolating many rural communities for most of the winter. As a young kid, Bombardier spent long winters thinking about a vehicle that can travel through snow, to ease the rugged winter months.
In 1922, when he was 15, Joseph's dad gave him an old model T ford engine. He took the engine and attached it to a four passenger sleigh . He then installed a huge wooden airplane propeller on the drive shaft behind the transmission, to let the sleigh runners glide through the snow.
