West Side Story is truly a miraculous play, one minute they can be singing a joyful love song and the next they are systematically tap dancing under a highway. But as simple as it looks, the play went under several changes that rewrote the story line completely. When Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents thought of the idea of West Side Story they were going to call it East Side Story. ... But when they were able to go back to the play, the significance of having it as an East coast play was lost, so they decided to move to its current idea of having as a West Coast gang story because during that time there was increasing gang violence in the Los Angeles area. ...
