Jewish survival has become one of the main issues of contention since the period of the holocaust. But in answering the question many issues must be addressed, the most important being whether Jewry as an ethnicity will survive over Jewry as a religion, and whether so called Jewry will still identify with either form. Another question that will be asked is what Jews will base this shared identity on, if anything at all, and further, if there actually is a shared identity.
One thing that is commonly agreed on by both scholars and non-academics is that the Holocaust was the most destructive and direct threat to the Jewish people as a whole. The holocaust alone caused the near extinction of European Jewry. But in saying this, it is not the only threat, only the largest threat the Jews as a race faced. Today it is modern society that poses the biggest threat to Jewish survival, in particular through a less violent means, in the modern world it's a political strive for survival. This is Social Darwinism in effect, where a 'survival of the fittest' scenario comes into play, which is to say that Jewish survival by this theory depends on Jewry staying strong in numbers and influence, but neither view is hopeful. What the Jewish race as a whole will have to look for in the future is some common ground to which they can base a shared identity on.
