Life and Times of an Automotive Giant
Modern society has developed a love for the automobile that is stronger than just about any other invention in the last century. The automobile not only serves us in a utilitarian mode of transporting us from one place to another, it also has evolved into an almost living entity with a personality and soul of its own. Often, the car transcends its primary purpose of mere transportation and takes on a role of trusted companion or symbol of power and virility. Two such examples that come to mind are the Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche sportscars. To have been responsible for the design of one of these world famous names would be the accomplishment of a lifetime. Yet one man has the distinction for the birth of two instantly recognizable icons of the automotive world. That man was Ferdinand Porsche, Sr.
Ferdinand Porsche was born on September 3, 1875 in a small village called Maffersdorf, which was located in a section of Europe known at that time as Bohemia, which later became part of Czechoslovakia. Maffersdorf was an area that had been settled by German-speaking tradespeople and was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Mossman 293)...
