In 1948 the English novelist George Orwell, famously known for his great novels such as Homage To Catalonia and Animal Farm, released the novel 1984. The book became among the greatest classics of modern literature, introducing the world to the phenomenon of “Big Brother” and perhaps the most famous and most read science-fiction novel of all time along with Huxley’s Brave New World. The year is 1984 and the story takes place in London, the world is divided into three super powers: Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. With Oceania covering the British Isles and the whole of the American and Australian continents, London is located in Oceania. The dividing of the world into these three states came about during a huge revolution and nuclear war during the ‘40s and ‘50s. The three super powers are in terms of structure and political ideology not very different, actually the way the governments are controlling the populations are completely the same. There’s still a war going on. It is always two of the super-powers against the other one, with alliances constantly changing, depending on different things such as territorial interests. Neither of the super powers will ever able to destroy the other one, and neither of them have any interest of doing so. The war is mostly fought at the borders only, and the normal population doesn’t even notice the presence of the war expect when the war prisoners of the enemy every once in a while is shown for the masses or a rocket bomb is falling down in the inner city of, for example London. It might sound a bit weird that there is a war at all but this quote from the book sums the reason up very well: “The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily human lives, but the products of human labour.
