I had first heard about Cambridge spies due to a miniseries on the BBC. I was very interested in the show and the story of the spies due to how far they got before having to defect to Russia. I learned a lot due to my research. The following is a summary of the Cambridge spy story and further background info on the men who were the Cambridge spies
The Cambridge spies were recruited and knew each other due to their belief that communism was a good thing. The four friends (Kim Philby, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, and Anthony Blunt) were part of the communist movement at Cambridge. The four came from well-known families and had good reputations. Kim Philby was born in Ambala India, and attended Westminster before Cambridge, Donald MacLean's father was minister of education, Anthony Blunt was related to the royal family and Guy Burgess simply lived for communism. The Russians picked these men because they were the last one would expect to be spies. However before the four could do any kind of missions they had to be what they hated and that was the establishment. The men had to join several gentlemen clubs and attain certain jobs to ensure that no one would believe that they still thought the communist movement was a just one...
