This report will be reinforcing Sid Chaplin's position in the novel What Katie Did (WKD). In this short story Chaplin views class distinction through the account of a young working class woman called Katie. Chaplin clearly defines the different classes within the 1800's. He develops strong characters within each class and through this he subtly weaves his own bias based upon his personal experiences. Katie is Chaplin's heroine in the story and although she is trapped within the class system Katie manages to rise above it.
Class refers to a social stratum whose members share certain economic, social, or cultural characteristics. In WKD there are clear demarcation lines between the aristocrats and the miners. The aristocrat class seemingly shows a general distain toward the working class. "the mining communitythese dissatisfied plutocrats" (WKD, page 37). The aristocrats' distain was also clearly shown when Katie arrived at the door of the big house...
