The Patriot = The Swamp Fox

In 1932 two integral parts of the American revolutionary war were born. George Washington and Francis Marion are the two men I speak of. Francis Marion grew up to be the commander of the militia forces in South Carolina. This man was nicknamed "The Swamp Fox" by the British for his excellent guerilla warfare tactics during the revolutionary war. These two men both helped the cause of American independence, but in very different ways. General Washington took command of the regular Army and lead troops face to face against the British redcoats; Francis Marion took control over the South Carolina militia and used guerilla tactics he learned from the Indians during the French and Indian wars to terrorize the redcoats. The movie The Patriot parallels the life of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. Mel Gibson plays Benjamin Martin, a farmer in South Carolina. Martin gets involved with the war when one of his sons is shot by a British officer. He ends up leading a band of militia men from a swamp base using hit and run tactics, hence the likeness to the real Swamp Fox...
