The Minister's Black Veil vs. The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne incorporated many of the same themes into two of his works, The Minister's Black Veil, and The Scarlet Letter. The theme of hiding sin vs. being open about sin is prevalent in both works, as is the theme of sin being universal. In The Scarlet Letter, the story centers on the two main character's lives after they have sinned. The Minister's Black Veil is about one main character, Reverend Hooper, and how his life changes after he sins. Reverend Hooper's character is almost like a mixture of Hester and Dimmesdale. Like Hester, he wears a noticeable garment on himself that represents his sin, that isolates him from the community, and that changes how he acts. Like Dimmesdale, he is a minister, he preaches constantly about sin and has a hard time enjoying life because he feels so guilty all the time about sins he has committed. One major difference between Hooper and Dimmesdale and Hester is that the nature of Hooper's sin is unknown, while Dimmesdale and Hester are both guilty of a specific sin; adultery...
