The Order of Canada is an award considered to be Canada's most prestigious award for lifetime achievement. This award recognizes people who have made significant contributions to their country. Since the award was first created in 1967, more than 4,000 people have won this honourable award. I feel that Pierre Elliot Trudeau, by some considered one of Canada's greatest Prime Ministers, is definitely well accomplished and worthy of the Order of Canada. It was not just his extended stay in office totalling 15 years, it was his outstanding performance and actions that make him stand apart from other Prime Ministers. In 1969, Trudeau created the Official Languages Act, which officially made Canada a bilingual country. In 1970, he implemented the War Measures Act because of the October Crisis and the FLQ incidents in Quebec. And finally, in 1982, Trudeau repatriated the constitution from Britain and introduced the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These are only three of many of Trudeau's important accomplishments while serving as Prime Minister.
I feel that Pierre Elliot Trudeau should receive the Order of Canada because of the 1969 Official Languages Act...
