Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Harden County, Kentucky. He and his stern and illiterate father never got along with each other. His mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln died when he was but nine-years-old. Tomas Lincoln remarried shortly after Nancy Hanks Lincoln died to Sarah Bush Johnston.
Little Abe immediately grew close to her. She taught him to read and write and often took his side during his frequent arguments with his father.
As a youth, Lincoln stood out from the crowd. He was tall and lanky at six-foot four-inches. He had amazing strength, which was demonstrated often as he wrestled town bullies and split rails.
