The theme in Sandra Cisneros, "Four Skinny Trees" is not giving up. Not giving up is important because if we gave up all the time we probably wouldn't be here, have the stuff we have or end up having a good life. But in this story, Esperansa, the main character is not giving up for these reasons, she's not giving up on her family because her family does not pay attention to her so this causes her to hate, feel sorrow and frustration.
In the first paragraph it says, "They are the only ones who understand me" this means that no one understand her in her family but herself. "I am the only one who understands them," in this sentence she feels lonely. "Four skinny trees with skinny necks and pointy elbows like me," in this metaphor the main character is describing her self. "Four who do not belong her but are here," in this sentence she is trying to say that she is different. "From our room we can hear them, but Nenny just sleeps and doesn't appreciate these things," this means that Esperansa tries to talk, Nenny, Esperansas' younger sister but Nenny does not care.
Then in the second paragraph says, "Their strength is their secret. They grow furious roots beneath the ground...
