The Individual and Society in the 19th Century


     From my study of the Individual and Society in the 19th Century and from the insight I have gained from others, the idea of how an individual relates and reflects to specific institutions within society is clearly evident.

     By studying the texts Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, directed by Simon Langton and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontė, I have realized that individuals come in different forms and relate to their respective worlds in distinct ways, often contrasting to other characters and conventions in the specific text. ... Lockwood, it is now clear to me that characters can conform to values within society but contrast significantly to others within the text. Lady Catherine is a prime example; she conforms to the social institutions of class, wealth and marriage yet clashes with characters in the story because of her proud and arrogant mannerisms and how they contrast to the values held by other characters such as Elizabeth Bennet. ... His views differ to characters within the novel such as Heathcliff and those at Wuthering Heights because their values are not shaped by traditional institutes in the 19th Century. By individually studying texts such as these, the idea of institutions within society such as class, education and wealth have become more defined and clear to me.
