INTRODUCTION
In this assignment, I will examine a specific critical incident I experienced in clinical practice in which communication played a significant part.
For the benefit of the assignment I will be using Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle to discuss the incident and then reflect on what I learnt from the experience.
I will demonstrate an awareness and evidence of barriers and boundaries in effective communication. Long (1999) suggests that interpersonal skills form the tools necessary for effective communication.
I will show an understanding of the theory learnt during this module and show how the theory related to the observation made during this assignment.
DESCRIPTION: What happened?
While on placement on an orthopedic ward I observed my mentor, I will call her Emma for the benefit of this assignment and to protect her confidentiality in keeping with the guidelines set out in the Nursing and Midwifery Councils (NMC) code of professional conduct (2002), carrying out patient admissions on a number of occasions. When Emma felt I had observed enough admissions, she decided it was time for me to do one. Emma said it would be less stressful if I did the admission on my own, she did not want me to feel she was "breathing down my neck".
