Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?
Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled in large by the English, the regions emerged into two separate societies by 1700. There were several factors that accounted for this separation of development. First of all, the two regions differed greatly in religion. New England was focused on Puritanism while the Chesapeake people believed strongly in Christianity. The two societies were also economically diverse. Lastly, government was an issue. New England claimed that they were unable to defend Virginia against a Dutch attack in 1673. For these reasons, New England and the Chesapeake region began to develop into societies independently...
