In a world where one is not everlasting, to define oneself would be to finding one's true self. Confusion and misinterpretation causes chaos and corrupts one's self. Joy and understanding leads one to find their true identity. In the midst of corruption and chaos, the perceptions by others may lead to more confusion and cause the person to be lost.
In Tracks, Erdrich creates the character Pauline, who is lost and confused at a tender young age of fifteen. Pauline is torn between two cultures, the Native American and white cultures. Though it seems that she leans towards the white side, she cannot let go of her other half, which will always be a part of her no matter what she thinks. Pauline is also torn between her emotions, she has never felt acceptance in the places she has been, she is always lurking in shadows and never to be seen. Acceptance was a foreign word to her. Pauline had lived for the past fifteen years without knowing it and understanding it...
