Whenever we open a newspaper we always see articles about various crimes such as murder, theft, extortion and so on there is one other crime which is printed regularly and that is the problem of dowry deaths. We read articles on every other newspaper about newly wed brides who are either burnt alive or commit suicide because of the harrasment given to them by their inlaws. Statistics say that even though about 4 to 5000 cases are registered with the police for dowry harrasment every year around 25000 brides are killed or disfigured over dowry disputes. These statistics speak badly about a developing country like ours where such backward practices are still being done.
What is dowry? Why is is so prevalent? What can be done to prevent it? let us analyse it one one by one.......
