Ethical Dilemmas

An attorney at a successful law firm meets a prospective client. Before consulting with the attorney privately, the client introduces the attorney to her 16 year old daughter. Leaving the child in the waiting room, the attorney and prospective client go into another room and the woman tells the attorney that she would like him to locate two individuals. The attorney questions the woman further and she confesses that the girl he had just met is not her daughter however the woman has raised the child since birth. Puzzled, the attorney questions her further. She admits that when she was younger she had a serious drug problem, and for some reason believed she could kick her addiction if she had a child to care for. The child she introduced as her daughter was actually another woman’s child. The woman stole the baby out of the hospital nursery shortly after her birth. She kicked her addiction and went on to marry and have two children of her own. The woman tells the attorney that she recently read a newspaper article about the woman whose baby she stole as well as the nurse who was susptected of stealing the child. In the article, the mother said that if she just kenw that her child was okay it would put her mind at ease. The nurse, now a recovering addict, working as a waitress wanted to know that there was just one person in the world who believed her. The woman wants to hire the attorney and his firm to locate the birth mother and nurse.
