What are preservatives?
Food additives are chemicals that are used to enhance the taste, appearance (colour), the texture and life expectancy of food. Preservatives are especially aimed at improving the longevity of food, thus increasing their shelf life. Preservatives protect the food against harmful bacteria, which can cause the food to ruin.
Why are preservatives useful to man?
Preservatives allow man to be able to by in bulk without the worry of the food spoiling over time. Our food is always fresh, and we don't have to worry about preserving it ourselves by alternative methods, such as freeze drying, canning or smoking. Preservatives make our life style easier.
