The most intriguing thing about the novel, Ellen Foster authored by Kaye Gibbons was that the story was very real. Many people share Ellen's hardships. It was nice to see Ellen endure and come through such horrific experiences with maturity and grace. Ellen had to grow up really fast and through these experiences she became very mature and independent.
One thing for sure is that Ellen is very independent, not really having to rely on much in order to survive. She learned how to take care of herself. She would still need adults in her life to provide money, but she managed to get along without their love. Ellen explained "Each month one of his brothers would bring him some cash money in an envelope and I would make sure I got to it before my Daddy did." This quote shows that Ellen was independent because she knew the bills would not get paid by her Dad. By taking the money, hiding it and not telling anyone about it she was able to survive...
