In 2000 O' Brother, Where Art Thou was released as an adaptation to The Odyssey written by Homer. Throughout the movie there are quite a few similarities between characters, plots, themes and events that happened in the book.
I would prefer to go in chronological order to the movie. In the beginning of the movie Everett (Odysseus) is fleeing a chain gang with two companions, Delmar and Pete, who are promised treasure in exchange for helping Everett escape. However, there is no treasure and his real motive is to get home to his wife Penny (Penelope), who is going to marry another. Odysseus, on the other hand, is on Calypso's island being treated like a God with an offer from Calypso of eternal life and youth if he would stay with her, but leaves the island for the love of his wife, Penelope (Penny). During the escape in O' Brother Where Art Thou, Everett, Delmar and Pete find themselves on a railroad maintenance car with a elderly man with "No Name." "No Name" tell them of the journey that they are going to take the obstacles they are going to face and the loss of fortune that they seek. Tiresias, the Thebian, fulfills the "No Name" role in the book when Odysseus goes to the Land of the Dead to find out how to get home...
