A major issue in today's media is whether some of the most common anti-inflammatory medication are safe enough to be sold outside of pharmacies or without a doctor's prescription. Since January 1st this year, painkillers containing ibuprofen have been on sale from supermarket shelves across the country. It is found in some of the most popular pills we turn to including Nurofen, Herron Blue, Advil and Panafen IB and it is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve inflammation, swelling and pain. Before it was so readily accessible, ibuprofen was only available in Pharmacies. Now, less than one month later, our major health organizations, doctors and pharmacists are beginning to question such a decision.
According to Dennis Leahy, who represents the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, along with the Australian Medical Association, both warned the Federal Government a long time ago about relaxing regulations when concerning the health of our nation. "It changes the emphasis from a drug that should be used with caution and care to something that is freely available," he says, "their idea is delivering groceries whereas in a pharmacy, they deliver healthcare. A supermarket is an inappropriate place for healthcare to be delivered where people can just pick it up without due consideration about what the affects may be."
