The Massachusetts' Supreme Court recently removed the main obstacle that prevented homosexuals from getting married. Starting on May 17, 2004, Massachusetts becomes the first and only state to permit homosexual marriages. This decision was made when the judges in Massachusetts' highest court deemed it unconstitutional to force gays and lesbians to have "civil unions" rather than marriages. These civil unions gave gays and lesbians the same rights as heterosexual couples, but only in the state of Massachusetts. Therefore, one of the major questions that arose was will these marriages be recognized once they leave the state? Most states, like Ohio who has just past a strict ban on same-sex marriages, says no. Massachusetts' decision has very well caused an uproar within both the states' and federal governments, causing it to now become a pressing issue in the upcoming presidential election. This decision may very well cause a redefining of the meaning of marriage.
