The North and National Abraham Lincoln knew that national unity of the states was the most important vital element to ensure security in the union.
He wanted to sustain a big, wealthy, country with a strong military. Many people think that he cared about national unity more than ending slavery in the south.
The main problem with national unity was the southern states considered their states more important than the union and felt they had the right to leave at any time.
Southern people such as the great legendary general Robert E. Lee who graduated from WestPoint high in his class. Abraham Lincoln offered Robert E. Lee a spot of being top general of the union army. Lee declined because of his undying loyalty for the state of Virginia.
